Mahbub Zamal Shamim

Mahbub Zamal Shamim, born in 1960 in Jessore, Bangladesh, is a distinguished sculptor whose artistic philosophy and social vision position him among the most influential cultural figures of his generation. As a young apprentice to the legendary master painter S.M. Sultan, Shamim absorbed a deep humanistic sensibility and a profound respect for rural life—elements that later shaped his artistic identity and his celebrated sculptural language.

During his student years at the Institute of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, he developed his signature style, “Beauty in Obesity,” a visual approach that celebrates the vitality, dignity, and grounded presence of robust human forms. He completed his BFA in Sculpture in 1985 and earned his MFA in 1990.

In 1985—while still a student—Shamim founded Charupith, an art institute created to nurture art education and research at the grassroots level. His vision was to weave art into the social fabric of everyday life and to encourage communities across Bangladesh to establish art schools for children. His belief in the democratization of art reflects the ideals of both Zainul Abedin and S.M. Sultan.

Shamim is also widely recognized as a key initiator of the modern concept of “Mongol Shobhajatra,” the vibrant New Year procession that has become a national cultural phenomenon. By drawing from traditional motifs and community participation, he helped transform the procession into a symbol of collective identity, joy, and resilience. This contribution exemplifies his commitment to integrating art, heritage, and social empowerment.

He received a Fellowship in Innovative Social Entrepreneurship from the Ashoka Foundation (USA) from 1997–1999, acknowledging his impactful community engagement through art.

Shamim has held three solo exhibitions and participated in numerous national and international group shows, including the 55th Venice Biennale (2013). His works are held in significant public and private collections in Bangladesh and abroad. He is also a Gold Medal recipient from Rotary International Bangladesh (2011).

Today, Mahbub Zamal Shamim continues his artistic practice as a freelance sculptor while serving as Principal of Charupith – Art Research Institute, Jessore, where he remains dedicated to nurturing the next generation of artists.
