Kazi Ghiyasuddin

Born in Madaripur in 1951, Kazi Ghiyasuddin is one of Bangladesh's most distinguished contemporary abstract painters. After graduating from the Government College of Arts and Crafts (now the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka), he continued his education in Japan, earning both a master's degree and a PhD from the Tokyo University of the Arts (formerly the National University of Fine Arts and Music, Tokyo). Dividing his artistic practice between Bangladesh and Japan for many years, Ghiyasuddin developed a refined abstract language characterised by layered colour, disciplined composition, and meditative spatial rhythm. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he has presented numerous solo exhibitions in Bangladesh and internationally, including around twenty exhibitions across Japan, and has received many honours, notably the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays, conferred by the Government of Japan in 2018 in recognition of his contribution to cultural exchange.
