Jahan Afroz

Jahan Afroz is a multidisciplinary Bangladeshi artist whose practice encompasses watercolour, quilting, ceramics, jewellery, and decorative tile-making. A brilliant watercolourist and skilled craftsperson, she is particularly celebrated for her quilt works, through which she translates the language of nature into richly coloured, tactile compositions.

Afroz holds an MFA from the Institute of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, and her artistic sensibility is shaped by both Eastern and Western visual traditions. Currently based in Maryland, USA, she works as a freelance artist, continuously exploring material, colour, and form as vehicles for emotional and spiritual reflection.

Her acclaimed quilt series Colours in Quilt exemplifies her ability to reimagine textile as a fine art medium. Drawing inspiration from flora, seasonal change, and surrounding landscapes, Afroz instinctively visualizes fabric as a completed artwork even before the process begins. As she describes, her quilts become vessels for trees, flowers, and the rhythms of nature—stitched with intuitive harmony and vibrant colour.

The artist’s philosophy centres on “Shantih” (peace)—a recurring theme in her practice. This was powerfully expressed in her 2010 exhibition at the J. Glenn Beall Memorial Hall, St. John’s Episcopal Church, Frostburg, Maryland, a milestone presentation that resonated deeply with audiences for its meditative calm and poetic engagement with nature. Her decorative tiles and jewellery similarly reflect this tranquil worldview.
